Reasons & occasions to engrave

Engraving was once quite a popular practice in earlier eras. Roughly fifty years ago, the practice seemed to drop off a bit. In the past decade or so, however, this hobby/practice has become quite popular once again. The reasons for practicing the art of engraving are great, but can be narrowed down to a very few via their individual popularity.

The most used form of engraving is that of personalizing gifts. This can be done on wood, glass, metal, or even leather. For example, say you have a Christian friend who has a birthday coming up. You can save a lot of money by not going out and buying an expensive gift, but buying something affordable and engraving it. A glass goblet would be an exceptional gift in this particular case. One could actually engrave a cross into the glass of the goblet, making the gift completely original. The recipient would love it. All sorts of gifts can be personalized in this manner.

Another good reason to engrave is for identification purposes. One example of this is the wallet. Many people will actually engrave their names and phone numbers on their wallets and/or purses. The reasoning behind this is that if the item is lost, whoever finds it will instantly know whom to contact. This also applies to dog and cat collars.

One of the most popular reasons to engrave, by the creative and talented individuals, is that of art. Engraved items can be bought cheap and sold extremely high as works of art. For example, one can buy a tree slice, any hardware store will carry them, for around two-dollars, and engrave a panoramic scene on it and sell it as a work of art. It’s that simple.

There are literally thousands of uses for the engraving process. You can make personalize staffs, engraved family trees, and VIN numbers on your car in to lower your insurance costs. There is truly no end to the possibilities. Get yourself an engraving kit and try it out. It’s the hobby that will last you a lifetime.
