Custom hand engravingCustom hand engraving is a practice that dates all the way back to prehistoric eras. As near as archaeologists and researchers can surmise, it all began in the stone walls within and around the stone structures that ancient man used as homes. Early on, it began as a stone on stone technique. Later on, engravers begin to use other tools and other surfaces for their artistic carvings. Through the process of artistic evolution, the craft eventually led to the concept of sculpting. Despite the simple origins of custom hand engraving, today it is practiced on a wide variety of surfaces with an even broader selection of tools. Today it is not uncommon to see engraved metal, glass, wood, plastic, and even concrete. More often than not, the uses have become everyday concepts of non-artistic carvings, but the art still survives in many individuals. Artistic engravers utilize a particular item called a “burin” to etch a certain design into a target surface, among other tools. Another often used, particularly on steel and copper, is that of the Florentine. There are also gravers, both flat and round, roulets, burnishers and mezzotint rockers. The list goes on and on, largely depending on the material that you are using as your surface. Despite popular opinion, the art is still a highly prized commodity. Though one doesn’t tend to see very many exhibits of this particular style of artistry, custom hand engraving is a highly prized art form in certain countries. Take the Spanish museum, “Museo del Grabado Espenol Contemporaneo” for example. This museum is entirely dedicated to the artistic aspects of custom hand engraving. Within the walls of this impressive exhibit hall you will find engravings exhibited alongside other art forms from such greats as Picasso and Miro. Though custom hand engraving begins as a hobby, it could easily lead to becoming a dream come true and fame and fortune.
